Impressive PAIR of late 19th century French bronze candlesticks- the detail on these is so delightful- tripod shaped bases with diving dolphins on each leg - rose swags , acanthus leaves and draping, swirling swags around the columns. They have perforated bobeche & decorated cups.
The frequent appearance of dolphins on French items has occurred since the 13th century- a stylised Dolphin first appears on the coat of arms of Guy IV, Count of Vienne in the Dauphiné region in South East France . Guy VIII sold his holdings to the French crown with the proviso that from that date forward the heir to the throne would carry the title “Dauphin”, a tradition that endured until the French Revolution.
In French the word for Dolphin is Dauphin, hence the connection.
