Coffee Pot /Lidded sugar bowl /Creamer jug / 6 x Cups and matching saucers - rare cobalt blue colour way

Six beautiful antique Japanese fine porcelain moriage Dragon cups & saucers - in a striking and unusual colour way of Cobalt blue & gold - with lithophane Geisha image in the base of each cup.

These lovely Geisha lithophane cups were first created in the late 1800’s and production continued until the 1950’s. The cups are thin and the photo found at the bottom of the cup is created using a varying thickness of porcelain. Most of these porcelain cups are made in the Kutani region of Japan.

Many Geisha lithophane cups were sent, or brought, home by World War II servicemen who gave them to their wives. The images above show what is commonly referred to as a “Single Geisha”, with a classical Japanese hairstyle. In some versions, the geisha’s hair is adorned with chopsticks, garland or flowers.

Finest eggshell porcelain - attractive shaped cup on shallow pedastal base - with a decorative raised swirling dragon- The handle loops are exceptionally fine with further decorative slipware . The matching saucers have the same ornate dragon decoration.

Marked on the base (as per photo) "Lucky"

Condition -No damage - No chips, cracks or crazing-the exterior glaze is textural but matt - there are fine specks underneath the glaze inside some of the cups but these are a factory/glaze issue. To be picky the spout of the coffee pot has a few tiny, tiny old flea bites around the edge, but can be clearly seen in the photos - this coffee pot has obviously been enjoyed.
