This is truly rare - We collect early Aluminite, I adore it - the plain simplicity and clean lines of their products and the fact that it was such a ground breaking invention of it's time - Porcelain that could be heated to 300 degrees - and we have several pieces accumulated over many years of collecting -

This we have never come across before - the funnels that incorporate sieves and come in graduating sizes, yes we have and we do see - but this straight sided largest of their funnels produced, & only produced for a short period of time early on in production- due to the difficulty in firing - never have we seen before and this one is in perfect pristine, as new condition- which is amazing considering it was produced at the turn of the 20th century.

Wrapped up in brown paper at the back of a large walk in pantry, in the kitchens of one of the grandest houses in the region - we discovered this Aluminite treat ! These funnels were produced in 3 sizes & this is the largest standing 12"/30cms tall

Diameter of the opening 8"/20cms

You can see this funnel in the advertising board that was used to promote the launch of this new revolutionary new cookware.

Rene Frugier trained at the Sevres porcelain factory and then rented a factory called des Tanniers from Limoges in 1899 and bought one in 1907.

Rene made tableware & cookware using a special porcelain with a high proportion of clay to flux. the pieces were fired at a high temperature of 1430 degrees Celsius to make them heat resistant for cooking. Clearly quite ahead of the time - The pans won prizes in Paris during 1900-1901 and then again in London in 1902.

In 1910 the factory was enlarged and renamed L'Aluminite. During WW1 they made lab-ware and refractory glass, and after the war production returned to cookware & tableware.
In 1958 (or 1964, records vary)-the production of these pans ceased as it was considered too costly to produce this type of porcelain- L'Aluminite was bought by La Porcelaine Haviland.

We can date this piece , as it is clearly catalogued and by the stamp and format of the stamp-
There are examples of these pieces in the Porcelain museum in Limoges - (except the funnel !!)

Condition - Excellent antique condition - unglazed rim - typical of Aluminite , minute glaze blemish on funnel spout (see photo)
