Rare French antique 'Botte-cul' or monopod stool dating from the 19th century and used to sit on when milking cows ! This primitive rustic, wooden seat, was especially used in alpine valleys. It allowed the user to move from cow to cow with your hands free.
Often these were tied to belts - using the leather strap attached to the stool.
Very few of these early stools survived for obvious reasons they were often in wet, ground, many rotted and simply ended up as firewood!
It has a shaped "saddle" seat and is constructed totally from wood - there is a metal collar around the neck where the leg joins the seat; A leather strap is attached at the underside at the rear of the seat.
This stands alone - not requiring any support and it is possible that the leg was replaced at a latter date possibly to preserve. Seat absolutely original.
Good antique condition - No damage or evidence of previous termite, no holes or rot present.
