RARE set of 12/Twelve vintage Vallauris Louis Giraud small hand thrown plates- embellished with recessed gold glaze leaf outlines- these would set any table apart, but would look equally superb displayed.

Stylised leaf outlines which are enhanced with a unique "liquid gold" glaze - they have a distinct Picasso flavour - but of course having lived in Vallauris for many years - Picasso's influence can be found with many of the leading Vallauris ceramicists.

These plates would be hand thrown and therefore they each have their own uniqueness- one is very fractionally larger than the others (see photo 7) no two leaves are exactly the same - each would be individually scribed in the clay.

Have never come across this plate before by Louis Giraud - let alone a set of 12.

Louis Giraud was a French ceramist who lived & worked in Vallauris at the same time as Picasso. His works demonstrate a great mastery of ceramic art - he specifically experimented with gold glazes- his works also display organic simplicity.
Vallauris is labeled "City and Crafts". It holds this title thanks to its 2000 years of pottery tradition. This heritage begins in the Gallo-Roman era, with the manufacture of bricks and pots. In the 16th century, the city had its first 3 pottery factories, located in the current rue des Tours. In the spring of 1948, Picasso moved to Vallauris, a town renowned for its pottery. He took up residence in the La Galloise villa, and a year later rented a studio in a former fragrance factory in Le Fournas.
