Authentic French Gothic style plaster wall pockets - decorated with gargoyle style winged lions-Griffins- these are absolutely right and and as found dating from the late 19th century.
Griffins were displayed in homes in France in the 19th century as a symbol of prosperity, power, bravery, wisdom, and royalty
They are gilded and have a wonderful patina , you can see the terracotta, earthy bole peeping through from underneath where they have been rubbed over the years
The interiors are finished in a matter of black and they are both initialled/signed on the reverse HP.
There are three holes in the flat of the backs to allow for hanging.
The condition is as one would expect considering the age - there is some wear and there are some surface knocks which expose the white plaster - we have left as found as we like the character of the white showing though in places - but these could be easily retouched if you prefered- there are some signs of historic restoration -but all good and solid.
