French Antique Bordeaux Vieillard ironstone lidded tureen Soupiere - Plain stylish Ironstone -in amazing condition for the age of the pot and with a highly desirable shabby faded appearance that only comes from well loved pots .

A perfect addition to your French ironstone collection-A fine elegant , tall, high shape with detailed handles and a finial handle - There is a clear Bordeaux Vieillard stamp on the base- this stamp was in use between 1845-1865 - exceptionally difficult to find these very early pieces in such superb condition. - It has that pale blue hue to the glaze that is so typical of the Bordeaux factory.

The commercial success of Vieillard earthenware is substantial, and comparable to other pottery factories of the time. The products are widely sold in the Paris region, but also exported by ships leaving the port of Bordeaux.

In 1834, David Johnston – a Bordeaux merchant from an Irish family and mayor of Bordeaux from 1838 to 1842 – decided to acquire the old Tynac mills (or Chartrons mills, Quai de Bacalan), in order to convert the disused buildings into a fine faience and porcelain factory that would be active until 1895, the date of the death of Jules Vieillard's last son. In 1840, Jules Vieillard, requested by David Johnston, had become General Agent of the Bordeaux factory.
