The sweetest, sublime French antique Bordeaux Vieillard terre de fer lidded tureen Soupiere - exceptionally rare design and in a rarely found size -amazing condition for the age of the pot and with a highly desirable shabby pale tea stained appearance that only comes from well loved pots .
Low flying swallows in antique rose and claret - with a bold claret entwined foliage border and floral decoration. A shapely finial atop.
A perfect addition to your French ironstone collection- There is a clear Bordeaux Vieillard stamp on the base- this stamp was in use between 1845-1865 - exceptionally difficult to find these very early pieces in such superb condition. -
The commercial success of Vieillard earthenware is substantial, and comparable to other pottery factories of the time. The products are widely sold in the Paris region, but also exported by ships leaving the port of Bordeaux.
In 1834, David Johnston – a Bordeaux merchant from an Irish family and mayor of Bordeaux from 1838 to 1842 – decided to acquire the old Tynac mills (or Chartrons mills, Quai de Bacalan), in order to convert the disused buildings into a fine faience and porcelain factory that would be active until 1895, the date of the death of Jules Vieillard's last son. In 1840, Jules Vieillard, requested by David Johnston, had become General Agent of the Bordeaux factory.
This to me this is a most "perfect" ironstone tureen - The design is rare, the pretty petite size is so attractive and an amazing faience stamp from my personal favourite French factory.
