This is an absolutely stunning double sided processional church banner - One side is in a gold fabric with a fine gold thread running through the weave (hence the sparkle as carried !) and on the reverse side the ground is a self patterned silk damask weave in ivory.
Both sides of this banner feature exquisite embroidery, gold thread work, stump work, appliqué and beads. This truly is an example of some of the finest needlework. These magnificent works of art have served as visual representations of faith, history, and devotion within the Catholic tradition. Dating back at least 500 years, the history of church banners reveals a captivating narrative of religious expression, cultural symbolism, and the tireless craftsmanship of dedicated artisans.
This would originally have been carried on a large 'T' pole at celebrations & religious festivals. It is interesting, we live ad this was found in 'wine country' and on the gold side there is heavy reference to grapes, Wine and vines.
Around the edges and across the top of each side is heavy gold metallic twisted fringing of a superb quality. At the base are two lattice covered glass ball tassels - all in exquisite metallic thread.
On the ivory side is an appliquéd tapestry weave Madonna at whose feet are seated two angels.
This is all hand stitching - not machine.

This banner is a fine example of a French antique liturgical banner and would add a beautiful spiritual touch to your home. I could see it being used in theatre - as a shop display centrepiece or would look incredible over a bed.
Condition- Very good antique condition, no damage, tears or wear to the fabric, there are a few tiny specks near the top on the ivory side (see photo 8 -we have not attempted to remove) Embroidery, beads appliqué all intact and undamaged. There is a faint outline 'ghost' shadow on both sides in the centre- mentioned for complete accuracy.
