This is a most beautiful and rare piece of highly respected Art nouveau majolica - from the Montigny-sur-loing factory and from specifically the Atelier of Georges Auguste Jules Delvaux - and is an extremely rare example of the work of Ores Petit (signed at the base of the lamp on the side - see photo 7) His pieces are rarely seen as there were few produced.
Barbotine /Majolica and all hand painted - each piece unique, to find a lamp on a bronze base in perfect condition is extremely exciting - it is possible that this lamp started its life as an oil lamp - in or around 1860-1870 - which is when Ores Petit briefly worked at the atelier. His beautiful decoration depicts wild and blousy poppies against an ombre ground from deepest darkest depths of blue at the base of the lamp to a pale watery sky blue at the top. The lustre and gloss of the majolica glaze is impressive - the brush strokes are also visible on the decoration- it truly does evoke the impressionist paintings of the time - the colourings and style of Monet's Lily pond and similar;
Montigny-sur-Loing , south of Paris was established by a group of ceramists who were inspired by the impressionist movement of painters of the time. They developed a new technique to recreate "painting the slip" or "batch gouache" to create an effect similar to the painters . At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the towns of Montigny-sur-Loing and Marlotte there are many artists like Jean-Baptiste Corot, Eugène Thirion (1839-1910), Adrien Schulz (1851-1931), Numa Gillet (1868-1940) and Lucien Cahen-Michel (1888-1980), all attracted by the quality of the landscape and the light. When Eugene Schopin founded a ceramics factory, he worked with the painters to create a range of designs inspired by Impressionism and decorated according to new public demands. Several ceramic factories will develop around this Impressionist movement. The most famous, such as Georges Delvaux (1834-1909), Albert Boué (1862-1918) and Charles Alphonse Petit (1862-1927), will produce until 1922.
