This is the most beautiful antique French fruits globe/glass dome - Napoléon III- It is absolutely as was and original- mid to late 1800’s
These are becoming increasingly difficult to find -by nature of the construction, only a few survive. This is beautiful in that it is equally beautiful from which ever angle or side you view- the dome is absolutely laden with had blown glass and papier maché fruits- some are painted and some have a 'flocked' velvet finish & silk foliage. Colours show slight fading in places but generally, overall are strong. The hand blown glass globe is in perfect condition, and original and sits on an ebonised base - the rebate in which the dome sits also has the original gold twisted rope.
Many think of these as marriage/wedding globes - but in fact they were traditionally given to celebrate 50 years of marriage -For those lucky enough to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, it was customary to give them a basket of fruit....
These fruits represented the four seasons; they were chosen to recall the symbols of marriage -Flowers turn into fruit.
Marriage produces children.
White grapes symbolise little girls.
Black grapes symbolise boys.
Apples symbolise fertility and love.
Peaches exorcise evil spirits.
There are even sour red cherries, a reminder of the sweet and sour periods the couple have experienced in their 50 years of marriage!!!!!
This truly is a French treasure and one that becomes rarer as time passes by.
Condition - Good antique condition - No damage to glass globe, the globe is hand blown glass and consequently does have tiny inclusions and bubbles. The base is undamaged and sits on tiny bun feet. The contents are with condition & wear appropriate to their age.
