Absolutely outstanding portrait of "Dr. Marteret" by listed artist Raymond L'Heureux & dated 1920.
This painting was exhibited at the 1921: Salon de l'École Française Exhibition Paris (Raymond Lheureux", Revue moderne des arts et de la vie, 1921, p. 12-13)- exhibition label on verso also. Several of Raymond L'Heureux paintings can be found in museums- one example is the portrait "La Rémoise" , painted a little later- can be found in the museum of Reims.
The oil painting is in the original deep gilded wooden frame - which has the stamp/label of HAVARD Père & Fils Framing/ Encadrement 123, boulevard Montparnasse 75006 Paris . They were established at this address in 1875 and are still there today.
The quality of the painting technique and the meticulous observation of the sitter ,the ability to capture a magical quality and kindness in the face and eyes of Dr Marteret is we believe quite exceptional- We also adore the background of the books, most likely the study of the Doctor- unusual to find such detail in the background of a portrait.
Raymond Lheureux -is most respected for his portraits, he completed several of Paris society, we feel very fortunate to be able to offer a portrait that was exhibited and and which received much acclaim at the time- considered to be one of his finest portraits.

During his studies in Paris, he lived on rue de Mézières. In 1911, he lived on rue de Chastillon in Châlons-sur-Marne. From 1911 to 1913, he served in the military.
Raymond Lheureux married on July 1, 1914 .During the First World War, he was a stretcher bearer at the front: he evacuated the wounded and gave them first aid "with dedication above all praise". He participated in the Battle of Verdun within the 154th Infantry Regiment. He made several portraits representing his front-line comrades during the war. In 1937, he became a member of the Winter Salon. From 1938, he lived in Paris.
Condition- The painting is in good antique condition , there is no loss of paint or damage/repairs to the canvas. There is some staining visible verso on the canvas but this has not compromised the facing of the painting. The wood frame is original to the painting and as such is time worn,it has taken light knocks and has been retouched historically- but we love the authenticity of the surround.
