This is such a rare and charming item, most likely originally in a small chapel as a corbel supporting a shelf or small arch - French, gilded, created from plaster, horse hair & linen,(evident on edges in a couple of places on the moulding) it dates from the early 19th century- It has Napoleonic & Baroque elements.

Painted & then gilded - this piece makes a most charming display piece. We rarely come across such genuine, authentic pieces of chapel decoration and that makes this piece so very special.

The condition is as one would expect considering the age - there is some wear - and there is some flaking of the paint in places - there are some signs of historic restoration -but all good and solid. At some time someone has inserted a large heavy wire hanger across the back , obviously used for hanging to display- fully stable and secure.
