Simply stunning 19th century French Candle or Bible box - Painted ebonised box with sliding door and Copper repousse worked scene of winged angels /putti- The quality of the work on this box is quite outstanding. This item we believe dates from 1870's /1880's.
The Copper panel covers the entire front and is held by the original nail fixings. The front door slides to the right and the handle grip forms part of the frame when in the closed position. The box is of a simple construction and is painted with ebonised finish - so popular in this period.
The box sits on Four wooden bun feet.
The Cherub/Putti scene is highly detailed - please do enlarge the photos and view they are an important and integral part of the description.
A simply stunning decorative French piece - which could be used to store candles as originally intended or as a small storage box-
Condition - Good antique condition - There is wear to the paint - light scratches etc - but this is commensurate with the age of this piece-ie. 150 years old - there is a tiny piece of the front wood sliding door panel corner missing on the top left - it does not extend into the copper plate or the design and is NOT visible when the door is closed - simply mentioned for complete accuracy.
