This is a magnificently chunky, heavyweight wooden French salt box - We believe this originates from a French village Epicerie - which possibly explains the advertisement for "Cerebos" salt. It is made from Chestnut wood and has a fabulous grain visible - particularly on the hinged lid .
The wood is thick and solid - at some point it has we suspect been near some heat, possibly a fire - quite often these boxes were placed near to the fire to keep the salt dry -on the reverse there are signs of scorch marks on the left hand side.
This is rare in that not only is it in excellent antique condition but is also unique with the advertisement .
Condition - Excellent condition- all joints and wood strong-no evidence of any worm -there is a split in the wood on the top pelmet - but it is strong and in no way weakens the box . label is a little damaged and worn in places - but typeface & image still clearly visible.
