This is a rare item that has survived several hundred years, This primitive French grape press dates from the last half of the 18th century, it is a fine display piece of primitive, folk art - carved and assembled from wood and iron and possibly modified over the years , the base sitting on tripod legs has been roughly carved from a piece of oak, a spout carved and fitted with a piece of tin to hide the grape juice.
The circular thick discs of oak are still with this piece , with the outer slatted cask but they have split with time.
The screw thread turns and depresses the bar. Clearly this would be unsuitable for food use now, but it provides a superb display piece for a rustic kitchen or French bar/ bistro style setting - from the Bordeaux region of France, home of fine wines.
Condition- As mentioned above - any wear commensurate with age , there is some evidence of old worm holes - but these are historic and no sign of any presence now, we have treated as a precaution.
