Rare & collectable French Wooden Saddle Tree - this dates from the mid 19th century and is constructed from Wood, linen and Iron.

From the established and prestigious French Saddle Tree makers - with an outstanding heritage dating back to 1856 - L'Arçonnerie - based in Bessieres in the South of France and still producing fine saddles today.

The job of the saddle tree is to distribute the rider's weight over the horse's back, making it more efficient and comfortable for the horse. A tree consists of five basic parts - the two bars that run parallel, the fork that holds the bars together at the front, the cantle that holds the bars together in the back, and the horn. The cutout or tunnel underneath the fork is called the gullet. The open space created between the bars is called the gullet channel.

This "Tree" carries the manufacturers sticker and a number signifying the size -this would have been produced as a sample- which adds to their rarity and it is in superb condition considering its age - It is painted a dark forest green - which has naturally aged over the years and has developed the most amazing patina- the iron work is strong.the linen covering is visible and creates texture.

We believe it makes a perfect display item - not only for the equestrian lover - but also in an industrial, primitive style setting - it is chunky, solid and sculptural.

It carries a large iron ring hook on the rear - therefore it could very easily be displayed on the wall - as opposed to standing on a flat surface - it also stands on the ends - offering numerous positions & opportunities for display.

Condition - It is time worn & over 150 years old -some age related wear as would be expected - There is no evidence of worm , or rot or damage.
