Beautiful French antique oil painting portrait of a young girl in white blouse she is framed in a most superb Barbizon gilded frame - She is signed by the artist and we are able to date her to the 1860's-80's. She is from the home of a prominant Family in in the City of Poitiers, South West France.
She is painted with admirable skill and by a talented artist - there is exceptional attention to fine detail, her earring, her tendrils of dark hair falling onto her forehead and facially the shadow and detail around the cheeks and nose and eyes.
She is most definitely a painting and frame of outstanding quality.
The painting is in truly superb condition - it has obviously been displayed in ideal conditions and not exposed to light or dramatic changes in temperature- there is no visible distress to the surface - no loss of paint or damage old or recent. There are a couple of tiny flecks of paint on the background but these are from the original sitting/painting. We have made no attempt to clean the painting.
The french Barbizon gilded wooden frame is also of exceptional quality - it is deep and very heavy considering the size- it is absolutely true to the period both in style and condition. We believe this is the original frame to this painting.
Barbizon frames are named after a group of landscape artists, led by Theodore Rousseau, who were working in the village of Barbizon, They were part of the French Realist movement. and forerunners of the impressionists. They often use this style of frame to frame their paintings
The frame is in good antique condition - it does show some signs of small repairs and has perhaps had some areas of repainting in the past - but please bear in mind this frame is over 150 years old. There are no signs of worm or damage - It is solid and rigid.
