Flamboyant , bold and always noticed - Majolica is never a shrinking violet !
Barbotine is ever popular due to the beauty and depth of colour of the glazes - this handled serving dish, is in the most delicious colourway of aqua and rich ruby with green leaves against a cream ground. Hand painted. Frilled edges around all three compartments - two large compartments most likely for strawberries with the smaller one for cream.
Underneath it is signed/initialled by the painter, has a mild number of 300 and an impressed 'N'. - circa 1875.
We think this most likely to be from the Nimy-les-mons factory The period between 1851 and 1890 was the company’s peak period of majolica manufacture. Like many of the majolica designs that originate in Belgium and France, themes relating to nature are the most common with designs sharing a similar look. Glazes tended to be of a pastel nature with floral and natural designs dominating. Onnaing, Nimy-les-Mons and Wasnuēl, were all under the management of the Mouzin family.
Condition- Good condition - bright colours and clear - No cracks , hairlines or chips. There is some light tea -staining (all visible in photos) mentioned for complete accuracy - . Please do check the photos and enlarge they are an important and integral part of the description.
