Exciting find of a length of genuine antique Paul Dumas Indienne chintz wallpaper - Please be aware this is NOT a reprint.

Classic Chintz indienne design- print hand block in 10 colour paints design. Printed Paul Dumas along edge and Fabrication Francaise- exquisite detail and colourings. Still with a vibrancy and ageless quality that so many Dumas designs possess. The design is against a divine craquelure ground.

Paul Dumas was a Parisian designer and manufacturer of Wallpapers and Textiles active between 1906 and 1978.

Dumas had a studio at 24-26 Rue Notre Dame des Victoires in Paris, and a printing factory in Montreuil-sur-bois, to the east of Paris. Dumas purchased a disused printing factory in Montreuil-sur-bois in 1906, and then built a larger factory on its land in 1913. The factory burned down in 1913, and Dumas had a new one built the same year.

Dumas was a designer of scenery and draperies for the fancy-dress balls held by Paul Poiret. The Montreuil-sur-Bois factory produced wallpapers for Poiret's Atelier Martine, Paul Follot, Lina de Andrada, and Lucie Renudaut, among others.

Textiles produced by Paul Dumas are included in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. Wallpapers produced by Dumas in included in the collections of the Musée des Arts décoratifs de Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His Textile designs are highly sought after

This length has been carefully unrolled and rerolled to check condition - 2.2 metres (220 cms) in length - or 2 yards & 14.5" approx or 86.5".
The width is 76cms/30" (NB this is wider than many antique papers)
Pattern repeat - 40cms/15.75"

Condition - The antique paper overall is in good condition (please be mindful this roll is 100+ years old these papers do have a fragility that a modern roll does not-so saying that Paul Dumas wallpapers are much firmer and stronger than many rolls of similar age - There is light foxing -shading in places but visible on the photos to see- very useable.

This would be perfect for lining antique furniture pieces, covering boxes, framing, accent features.lampshades, screens, panels

So rare and so hard to find - by nature of the product so few survived.

Chintz, a type of multicoloured printed or painted wallpaper or fabric, originated in India but exerted its influence far beyond its shores: it became a driving force in the spice trade in the East Indies and attracted European merchants who, in the 17th century, imported millions of pieces. In the 18th century, Indian chintz became so coveted around the world that Europeans tried to imitate its vibrant dyes and unique patterns - a quest that finally triggered the mechanical and commercial innovations that ushered in the industrial revolution, with its far-reaching societal impacts.
