This is a beautiful twisted column large table lamp base- We suspect it originally started out life as an oil lamp base and then with the introduction of electricity was converted to electric. It was a "loaded" base which means it is made from sheet metal which was crafted to the shape - the lamp base would be hollow and then filled with a type of cement (most commonly pitch, which is made from various percentages of pine resin and plaster) that reduced in volume when it was first poured, then cooled inside the object, creating a void- this added weight to the item - and created the impression of a solid brass lamp - something that would have a much higher price tag! 
This is quite light in weight for the size, as over the years these items lost the "pitch" from inside - as it crumbled and broke down.

It would be feasible to open the base and fill with rice or similar and seal to add weight- although it stands very stable on a table top or similar.

This really is a most attractive lamp base and dates from circa 1850 - 1870's

The lamp is on a modern cable - without plug- and is full working - it takes a bayonet fitting light bulb B22
