This is a beautiful rare French country antique chestnut urn- constructed from toleware and cast iron, complete with liner and handles and with lid -originally would have been one of a pair.
Chestnuts would be roasted in the kitchens of the house and then carried in the liner and sat on a side table in the stand.
It carries an armorial shield with rolled feet and handles on tripod iron supports. It has decorative scroll work sides, toleware with a deep bottle green & gold finish. The lid is domed and with an acanthus surrounded finial (the trim is iron and the lid copper) and a barley twist decorative edge.
The metal inner with handles - is water tight. condition overall is excellent - any rub to paintwork or the finish is totally commensurate with the age of the piece.
Although this could of course still be used to house roast chestnuts- I see this sitting stylishly at the side of a stove or open fire to hold wood kindling/fire lighters.
This is a rare and delightful item.
