This is a captivating French oil on canvas painting, classical Baroque & dating from the mid to late 18th century- possibly very early 19th century. Painted by a follower of Nicolas Poussin (Les Anderlys June 15 1594 - Rome November 19, 1665) 

It depicts a scene after Poussins' painting of 1626 "Venus épée par deux satires -Venus spied on by two satyrs" - except in this painting there is only one Satyr -as opposed to two voyeurs. The colourings are typical of the Period and style, warm earthy tones - with strong reds the painting creates a theatre like space- 

The soft, diffused light illuminates their forms, creating a captivating interplay of shadows and highlights.At the heart of the painting lies the encounter between the celestial Venus and the earthy satyr. Venus, the embodiment of beauty and love, lies unaware in her divine purity. The satyr, a creature of the forest, represents the primal instincts of nature. Their juxtaposition symbolizes the tension between the sacred and the profane, the divine and the earthly. The cherub/putti is representative of love and protection.

This painting epitomises the opulence and grandeur of the Baroque period. The rich, saturated colours and sumptuous draped fabrics against the darkness and foreboding of the forest- the composition demands attention.

The painting is unsigned - provenance - Private Collection- France

The painting is framed in a gold, carved wooden Montparnasse frame of a later date than the painting.

Condition- This is a antique 18th century oil painting on canvas - it shows historical restoration (see verso & confirmed with UV) and there is craque lure to the surface of the oils- there is no apparent missing pictorial paint. We have included many images and a video in order for this listing to be totally transparent. The painted wooden frame is in good condition- showing no damage. In small areas there is evidence of rub where the red bole can be seen under.
